What is socialisation ?
The social process that individuals go through when learning the way of life of a society (our norms and values)

Define primary socialisation
Your first experiences with language, values and beliefs. It begins at birth and occurs within the home.
What does parsons argue?
We are socialised into gendered family roles which are crucial.
Define secondary socialisation
Starts when children begin to be more independent, usually at the point of beginning full time education. e.g. school. More multidimensional. Gender class, religion and politics.
What study shows how we are socialised by our peer groups?
Lees - boys seen as heroic for sleeping around where as girls were name called slags and sluts for the exact same behaviour.
What is the role of education in society?
Everyone learns the formal curriculum.
What is the formal curriculum?
The curriculum everyone must learn at school and is dictated by the government and monitored by OFSTED.
What is the hidden curriculum?
Responsible for teaching the everyday rules and regulations of school life. E.g teaching children how to be competitive by playing quizzes in lesson.
Who claims there is a 'male gaze' and what is it?
Mulvey suggests that the camera in films 'eyes up' female characters encouraging viewers to access their bodies and attractiveness from a male perspective.
What is parsons argument developed?
Men have an instrumental role and women have a more expressive role.
