The outer protective layer of the body
What does the skin protect?
It protects the interior from dehydration, microorganisms, abrasions and radiation.
SKELETAL SYSTEM
Comprises of the bones and cartilage of the body.
What does the skeletal system provide?
It provides rigidity to the body, support for soft internal organs, attachments for skeletal muscles, reservoirs for calcium and fat storage, and a site for blood-cell production.
NERVOUS SYSTEM
Processes information about the environment, the body’s interior, it initiates movement of the limbs and changes in the body.
What is the Nervous System comprised of?
The brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and ganglia.
LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
Comprises a series of delicate channels that drain tissue fluid through lymph nodes.
What does the Lymphatic System contain?
It contains lymphocytes and macrophages to sweep up foreign proteins, microbes, and cancer cells.
MUSCULAR SYSTEM
It brings about body movement, includes the voluntary muscles of the body. Muscle fibers attach eiter to a bone by a tendon, or to the skin, as is the case with fascial muscles.
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
Consists of the heart to pump blood and the arteries, arterides, capillaries, venules and veins to carry blood.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Extends from the mouth to the anus and has associated glands.
What are the associated glands to the Digestive System?
Salivary, exocrine pancreas, and liver.
What does the Digestive System concentrate on?
Ingestion, digestion, absorption of food and water, and excretion of residual waste.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Concerned primarily with bringing air into the body for exchange between the air sacs and blood.
What does the Respiratory System comprise of?
The nose, larynx, airways and lungs.
URINARY SYSTEM
Primarily concerned with excretion of nitrogenous waste (urea in urine) but is also important for control of the pH and ionic concentrations of the blood.
What is the Urinary System comprised of?
The kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra.
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
Made up of a series of glands that maintain homeostasis.
What is homeostasis?
The relatively constant internal state of the body.
What else does the Endocrine System include?
The pituitary, thyroid, adrenal and endocrine pancreas glands.
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
The male and female reproductive systems are concerned with the production and nurturing of the next generation.
What does the Reproductive System include?
Gonads- which produce sex cells, as well as associated glands – erectile tissue, the uterus and breasts.
