Answer
Rain that contains higher than normal concentrations of dissolved acidic gases, such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which cause the rain to have lower pH than normal.
Acid Rain
The build-up of toxic chemical in the fatty tissues of an organism.
Bioaccumalation
The increase in the concentration of bioaccumulated substances up a food chain.
Biomagnification
The permanent removal of large areas of forest or woodland.
Deforestation
When a body of water becomes overly enriched with minerals and nutrients which induces excessive growth of algae. This process may lead to oxygen depletion in the body of water.
Eutrophication
Atmospheric gases such as carbon dioxide and water vapour that trap infa-red radiation and thus prevent heat escaping back into space.
Greenhouse Gases
An increase in the greenhouse effect most likely caused by the release of additional greenhouse gases due to human activity.
Enhanced Greenhouse Effect
An increase in the mean temperature of the Earth's surface and atmosphere, possibly asa. result of the enhanced greenhouse effect.
Global Warming
The loss of dissolved mineral nutrients in soil water as it soaks deep into the ground beyond the reach of plant roots.
Leaching
Damage to the environment, people and other organisms, often as a result of adding chemicals to the air, waste or land.
Pollution
Human waste, faeces and urine, which needs to be disposed of.
Sewage
The washing away of soil as a result of rainfall when there is little vegetation to hold onto the soil.
Soil Erosion
Means using organisms, such as predator or parasite to control numbers of pests.
Biological Control
Competition between individuals belonging to different species.
Interspecific Competition
Competition between individuals belonging to the same species.
Intraspecific Competition
Predation of one species by another.
Interspecific Predation
Predation of individuals in a species by another individual of the same species.
Intraspecific Predation
An organism that causes damage to plants and animals.
Pest
A chemical used to kill pests (as rodents or insects).
Pesticide
Refers to the amount of food produced from a crop or farm animal.
Yield
Means to mix up, such as in a fermenter to keep the microorganisms in contact with the ideal amounts of nutrients and oxygen.
Agitate
Involve killing unwanted microorganisms to encourage sterile conditions.
Aseptic Precautions
A group of bacteria that produce lactic acid. Used in fermenting milk to make yoghurt and cheese.
Lactobacillus
A sugar found in milk and is a disaccharide of glucose and galactose.
