Explanation of task difficulty? | If someone is performing a difficult task, they are more likely to look to others for the right answer, so the likelihood of internalisation will increase. |
What is prosocial behavior ? | A behavior that is seen as helpful, kind and peaceful |
What is antisocial behavior? | Behavior that is unhelpful, destructive and aggressive |
Explanation of deindividuation for crowd behavior? | Deindividuation can explain crowd behavior because people loose their sense of personal awareness and responsibility in a crowd, especially if they are wearing a uniform. This makes them conform to the identify and behavior of the crowd. (which can prosocial or antisocial) |
What are the 3 difference types of conformity? | Compliance, identification, internalisation |
What is compliance? | Going along with the majority even though we might not privately agree. |
What is the explanation for compliance? | Normative social influence: compliance happens because we the need to fit in with the group. Its only temporary, the most superficial level of conformity. |
What is identification? | Temporarily adopting the behavior of a group or role model. |
What is the explanation for identification? | Deindividuation: identification happens because we have lost our sense of personal identity, possibly due to becoming part of a crowd or wearing a uniform. |
What is internalisation? | Going along with the majority by adopting their beliefs as our own. |
What is the explanation for internalisation? | Informational social influence: internalisation happens because we do not know how to behave, so the group provides this information, which we internalise (adopt as our own) |
What are the 3 factors affecting conformity? | Size of majority, unanimity of the majority, task difficulty. |
Explanation for the size of majority ? | If there is a majority of at least 3:1, they will have enough social influence, so the likelihood of compliance will increase |
Explanation of the unanimity of the majority ? | If someone has an ally who agrees with them against the majority, this will break the unanimity of the majority, so the likelihood of compliance will decrease. |
Explanation of task difficulty? | If someone is performing a difficult task, they are more likely to look to others for the right answer, so the likelihood of internalisation will increase. |
What are the 3 personalities that affect conformity? | Internal locus of control and external locus of control and authoritarian personality |
What is internal locus of control? | If someone has an internal locus of control , they feel in control of their own thoughts and behavior, so they may be less likely to conform. |
What is external locus of control? | If someone has an external locus of control, they feel that external factors control their thoughts and behavior, so they may be more likely to conform |
What is authoritarian personality? | Someone with this personality type tends to be more respectful to authority and more likely to obey. |
