ADVISORY GROUP of the medical staff which serves as the organizational line of communication between the medical staff and pharmacy department Charged with OVERSEEING ALL ASPECTS OF DRUG THERAPY in institutions like hospitals. Members are mostly physicians, but usually include at least one pharmacist and often include other members from other areas of the hospital (nursing, administration, quality assurance, medical records, laboratory). Primary Purposes of PTC
1 Advisory 2 Education
Primary Purposes of PTC 1 formulates policies regarding evaluation, selection and therapeutic use of drugs and related devices in the hospital 2 Recommends and assist in the formulation of programs to meet the needs of professional staff for Complete current knowledge on matters related to drugs and drug use

Organization and Operation must be: Composed of at least __ Appointed or elected official

FDA APPROVED DRUG which is recommended as being essential for good patient care with a well established usage. Once accepted as this, it may be prescribed by all members of the attending and house staffs.
Formulary drug
A drug approved by the FDA for the GENERAL USE but which the committee will EVALUATE FOR A 6 TO 12 MONTH period before final consideration. During the period, the drug may be prescribed by all members of the attending and house staff
Drugs approved on a conditional trial period
An FDA approved drug which is recommended for use in SPECIALIZED PATIENT CARE.
Specialized Formulary Drug
Approved by the FDA for a SPECIFIC USE by its principal INVESTIGATOR and designated ASSOCIATES. Such drugs are NOT COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE Protocol of the study must be submitted to the pharmacy if it is to be used in the hospital
Investigational drugs
Investigational drugs 1 Are not necessarily a new chemical substance but maybe:
1 An old or approved drug proposed for a new use 2 New combination of 2 or more old drugs 3 Combination of old drugs in new proportions 4 New dosage form or methods of administration. CAN
Drugs which DOES NOT QUALIFY for the FOUR CATEGORIES listed and will NOT BE STOCKED in the pharmacy IF PRESCRIBED, the pharmacy will obtain and dispense a LIMITED QUANTITY OF THE DRUG.
