Larger quantity of blood can be tested - Increased volume of blood present on thick film may allow the malaria parasite to be detected even with low parasitemia. - Compared with a thin film, a thick film is about 30 times more sensitive and can detect about 20 parasites/μL of blood. - The examination should be performed at low magnification to detect microfilariae.
