What did Rosenthal and Jacobson do?

Studies a primary school in California and conducted a field experiment. They told the teachers that the students were to sit a test to identify those who had potential to spurt ahead - this was false. They randomly picked 20% of the students and told teachers based on these results that they were spurters. On return after a year, they found that over half of them had gone on to outperform their peers
