How are the readings on the meter rule used to work out the extension?

To use the readings on the meter ruler to work out the extension, subtract the unstretched position from each reading. E.g. if the unstarched position was 30cm and the extension produced by 1N weight is 34, the reading for 1N would be 4 cm. Then plot the extension against the weight.
