The earliest manifestation of caries of the enamel is the appearance beneaththe dental plaque of an area of decalcifi cation which resembles a smoothchalky white area; the fi rst change is usually a loss of the inter-prismatic orinterrod substance of the enamel with increased prominence of the rodsmicroscopically.
