Is used in the treatment of urinary tract infections. It is bactericidal and has broad-spectrum activity. It works by inhibiting cell wall synthesis – specifically by inactivating the MurA enzyme (UDP-N-acetylglucosamine-3-enolpyruvyltransferase) – the enzyme needed to catalyse peptidoglycan synthesis.
