One “traditional” 10% rule that has since been modified pertains to familial cases. It is now recognized that as many as 25% of persons with pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas harbor a germ line mutation in one of at leastsix known genes, 10% are extra adrenal (organ of Zuckerkandl and the carotid body), where they usually are called paragangliomas 10% are malignant 10% familial 10% bilateral (may rise to 50%)
