PATHOPHYSIOLOGY Decreased protection against acid Can be caused by reflux of duodenal contents (pyloric sphincter dysfunction) and decreased mucus and bicarbonate production CAUSES NSAIDs and steroids inhibit production of PGE. (PGE stimulates production of the gastric mucosal barrier) H. pylori produces urease, which breaks down the gastric mucosal barrier.
