Reporting verb ‘said’ changes to ‘told’ if it is followed by an object.

Change in personal pronouns: The pronoun of the first person changes to the person and gender of the subject of the reporting verb. The pronouns of the second person change to the person and gender of the object of the reporting verb.

Saumya said, “I am fine.” Ans Saumya told that he was fine

Change in adjectives and adverbs (The words expressing nearness in time and place change to words expressing distance.) The reporting verb ‘say/said’ is changed to ask/inquire. The interrogative sentence is changed into a statement by placing the subject before the verb and the question mark is replaced by a full stop. If the interrogative sentence is a yes/no answer type sentence then ‘If/whether’ is used as a conjunction. Note- The conjunction ‘that’ is NOT used. Are you listening? You are listening.

Example: I said to him, “Where are you going?” I asked him where he was going.

In imperative sentences, the reporting verb is changed to request/command/order/allow etc. depending on the sentence and ‘to’(infinitive) is used.

Example: Granny said to me, “Bring my walking stick.” Granny ordered me to bring her walking stick.
