Question:

Why does Deploying a parachute slow down things?

Author: eric_galvao

Answer:

This is because of drag. When you skydive without a parachute, your terminal velocity is much higher as your drag has to match your weight. Parachutes increase your air resistance, because it has created a larger surface area for drag to act upon. Your terminal velocity becomes much lower, low enough to land safely. Decreasing drag = Bigger Terminal Velocity
